Since its founding in April 2023, the Friends of Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery (FCMGC) has worked alongside our community to preserve and protect the Historic Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery (est. 1884)—a sacred place that tells the story of generations who came before us. In just three short years, we have accomplished more than we could have imagined. From historic preservation initiatives and archaeological discoveries to volunteer cleanups, community partnerships, educational programs, and state-funded preservation projects, every milestone has been made possible through the dedication of people who believe this cemetery and history matters.
None of these achievements would have been possible without the love, generosity, commitment, and countless hours contributed by those who have stood with us and beside us every step of the way. To our Friends of Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery (FCMGC) Volunteers, Supporters, Partners, donors, and community advocates—thank you. Your service is preserving more than a cemetery; you are safeguarding a legacy, honoring those who came before us, and ensuring their stories will continue to inspire future generations. Because of you, history lives on.

This tribute honors the caretakers and stewards whose selfless service preserved Historic Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery for generations. Long before a preservation organization, grants, or restoration projects, these dedicated volunteers faithfully cared for this sacred ground, ensuring that those who came before us were remembered with dignity. Because of them, we have both the privilege and responsibility to continue their legacy. Established in 1884 under the leadership of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, the oldest African American church in Citrus County, Historic Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery predates the formation of Citrus County itself, which was established in 1887.
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, segregation denied African Americans burial in many local cemeteries. Crystal Memorial Gardens became the final resting place for generations of Black families. Even after the City of Crystal River was incorporated in 1923, African Americans remained excluded from burial within the city limits, and the cemetery continued to serve the community from its location in unincorporated Citrus County. For decades, the cemetery was maintained entirely by volunteers and the churches. The men of the community mowed the grounds, cleared brush, prepared gravesites, and cared for the resting place of their families and neighbors. Though often unrecognized, their faithful stewardship preserved an irreplaceable piece of our community's history.
In 1976, stewardship transferred from Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church to a community Board of Directors, which continues to oversee the cemetery today. As church membership and the local African American population have declined, preserving this historic cemetery has become increasingly challenging. To help meet that need, the Friends of Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery (FCMGC) was founded in April 2023 to support the cemetery through volunteer service, fundraising, preservation initiatives, and community partnerships. Our work is a continuation of the foundation laid by those who came before us. As we remember and build upon the foundation of Reuben S. Jackson, Carlton Washington, Strother Natteal, Jr., Deacon William Robinson, Strother Natteal III, Deacon Willie Joyner, Ray Lockley, Sr., Willie "Gate" Nelson, and the many unnamed caretakers whose quiet service sustained this sacred place, we offer our deepest gratitude. Their Legacy. Our Responsibility.
The Friends of Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery is proud to celebrate the community leadership and engagement of our Board members as they continue to serve throughout Citrus County.

FCMGC Vice President Dr. Danita Smith recently served as a member of the leadership team for the Inaugural Juneteenth Pageant, helping produce an exceptional event that celebrated African American culture, history, and excellence. Through the dedication of Dr. Smith and the entire planning committee, the pageant provided young people with an opportunity to showcase their talents, build confidence, and embrace the rich heritage of our community. Congratulations to everyone who helped make this inaugural celebration such a memorable success.

FCMGC Board President & CEO Andrea K. McCray was honored to attend the 4th Annual Crystal River Woman's Club Afternoon Tea, a charming gathering celebrating friendship, fellowship, and community service. The elegant afternoon brought together women from across Citrus County for an event filled with meaningful conversation, gracious hospitality, and lasting connections.

The next phase of our Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Survey is officially moving forward. On Thursday morning, FCMGC President Andrea K. McCray and Volunteer John Ortiz met at Historic Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery with our archaeology team, Gary Ellis and Stephanie of Gulf Archaeology Research Institute (GARI), to discuss the upcoming phases of the survey. During the site visit, recovered GPR survey flags were returned to the archaeology team, and together we explored portions of the cemetery's wooded parcels as part of our ongoing efforts to better understand and preserve the cemetery's full historic footprint. On Friday afternoon, we received official authorization from the State of Florida to proceed with the next phase of the GPR survey. This important work continues to advance our understanding of the cemetery's history, helping identify unmarked burials, document historic burial areas, and guide future preservation efforts with the dignity and respect our ancestors deserve. Preserving History Below the Surface. Honoring Legacy Above It.
What do NASA and Historic Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery have in common?
A shared Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) specialist. While Michael Wood applies his expertise to projects supporting NASA, SpaceX, and the aerospace industry, he is also leading the Ground Penetrating Radar survey at Historic Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Using the same advanced technology, our project is identifying unmarked burials, documenting the cemetery's historic footprint, and helping preserve the stories of generations who helped shape our community. It is a remarkable example of how cutting-edge science can serve historic preservation—ensuring that those who came before us are remembered with the dignity and respect they deserve.
