Volunteers and researchers gathered recently at Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery to continue efforts to locate sunken and unmarked graves using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), revealing deeper layers of the cemetery’s long-hidden history. 

Just outside Crystal River city limits, off Citrus Avenue, lies a Black cemetery rich in history with stories and lessons just waiting to be unearthed. Because of segregation, cemeteries were divided racially, and Blacks were not authorized to be buried within the city limits. Crystal Memorial Gardens is still an active cemetery and continues to serve as a final place of rest.
