As we prepare for our 3rd Annual Citrus County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Gala, we center ourselves once again on the powerful themes of Leadership, Legacy, and Love.
This year, as we honor the past and bridge to the future, we pay special tribute to a unique and beloved part of our community — the legacy of baking, passed down through generations with care, creativity, and heart.
We honor some of the greatest bakers in Citrus County, who have passed through time and whose hands and hearts nourished families, communities, and traditions: Oather Belcher, Louise Brooks, Mary Gray Bunch, Willie Mae Edwards, Theola Bunch McCray, Osie Mizzell, Earnestine Scriven Schlueter, Freddie Lee Simmons, Rena Mae Washington, and Elijah Wilson.
These remarkable men and women not only baked with love — they led with it. Their legacy reminds us that leadership often begins at home, and that love can be passed down one recipe at a time.
In their honor, we now pass these skills on to the next generation through our “Kid’s Cookie & Cupcake Workshop,” nurturing creativity and confidence in our youth, and continuing a sweet tradition of excellence.
Let us celebrate their memory, their contributions, and the future they inspire.
Kids can get creative while decorating freshly baked cookies and cupcakes with sprinkles, candies and frosting!

The Kid's Cookie and Cupcake Decorating Workshop will be held at the historic Citrus County Canning Center in Lecanto, originally constructed in 1938 as the Lecanto School. In 1970, the venue became the Citrus County Cannery and it's adaptation—from school to storage to canning facility—exemplifies community resourcefulness.
