A part of Preservation is Gravesite Location and Excavation. At our historic cemetery, there is a severe problem with flooding and sinking gravesites. Many have sunken over time and are covered by the earth.
In the following series of photos, FCMGC Volunteer John Ortiz, at the request of a family member, located a sunken grave from the 1960's and unearthed the gravesite. There are no formal records for the historic Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
A course with the Florida Public Archaeological Network (FPAN) in April 2024 taught us how to probe for sunken graves and the proper methods for cleaning headstones.
We have identified over twenty (20) sunken gravesites, excavated eight (8), and there is much more to be done.
Currently, we rely on the headstones and family memories for gravesite locations. One of our identified projects that we currently work on is documenting the gravesites. We are working to secure funding to complete a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) study to identify sunken graves that we were not able to find via probing.
