Preserving our history involves locating and restoring sunken graves. At our historic cemetery, flooding and earthcover have caused many graves to sink. Volunteer John Ortiz has successfully identified and unearthed sunken graves from the 1960s, helping us preserve our community’s history despite the lack of formal records.
In April 2024, we received specialized training from FPAN on probing graves and cleaning headstones. We’ve identified over 20 sunken graves, excavated 8, and continue our work to preserve these sacred sites.
We currently document gravesites using headstone info and family memories. Our upcoming project involves securing funding for Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to locate unmarked, sunken graves beyond our current detection methods.
